Yakuway Takes Possession of Its First Office Space in Toronto
Yakuway Indigenous Corporation has reached an exciting milestone, officially taking possession of the keys to our very first office space in Toronto, Lake Macquarie. This moment represents the culmination of years of planning, preparation, and vision as we work toward establishing a culturally safe, community-led service for the region.
Our Chair, Malcolm Smith, provided a walk-through of the building and shared the significance of the space for Yakuway’s future.
The new premises include several key areas that will support our growth, including:
• A welcoming reception area for community members
• A spacious boardroom that will serve both governance needs and community gatherings
• Dedicated workspaces for staff
• A large open-plan area that will evolve as services expand
• Outdoor views of the lake that bring a calming, natural energy into the building
Furniture and a refresh are underway, with plans to transform the space into a warm and inclusive hub designed to support the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the Lakes area.
“This is a proud day for Yakuway,” Malcolm shared during the walk-through. “We’ve spent the last couple of years laying strong foundations, and having our first office brings us one step closer to opening our doors to the community. Once fully operational, we hope to offer services five days a week and continue expanding from there.”
With few Indigenous-led services currently available for residents in the Lake Macquarie region, this development marks an important step forward. The Yakuway team remains committed to creating opportunities, offering support, and strengthening community connections well into the future.
We expect to be fully open for business in 2026, and we’ll continue to share updates as the fit-out progresses. This is just the beginning - and we are grateful to everyone who has supported the journey so far.
